Hello! My name is Katelyn Brassell and I am the owner and designer here at Cedar Shores Floral. I am so excited that you found us and I am looking forward to helping with your event floral needs!
Introduction
Business names are important, beyond being a necessary legal requirement, they show the world who you are, convey your values, and are the first impression of your business. Because of this, I thought it would be fitting to start off my blog with the story behind the name "Cedar Shores Floral".

How I Found Flowers
When I was preparing to leave for college, my mom encouraged me to take one class that sounded interesting and was outside my major. The class I had decided on was HORT 235: Beginning Floral Design. I've always loved nature and been drawn to flowers so I figured that it would be a nice break from my other classes.
I started my journey at BYU-Idaho in 2020, and oh boy—my first semester was rough. I missed home, was adjusting to college life, and often felt lost. But every single week when I walked into my floral design class, I felt at peace. It felt like my little slice of heaven! The more I learned, the more I realized I never wanted the class to end. I knew I would regret it if I didn’t pursue this field, so—without a concrete plan—I changed my major to Horticulture with an emphasis in Floral Design. As someone who loves to plan everything, making such a spontaneous decision was a big deal for me.
Shortly after switching, I mentioned my new major to someone, and they asked, ‘How are you going to make money doing that?’ That question stuck with me. Instead of discouraging me, it motivated me to dive deeper into the Horticulture and Floral Design industries, determined to turn my passion into a career.

Cedar Shores Floral's Start
As I gained more experience I was deeply inspired by the opportunities around me to create meaningful and personalized floral experiences that contributed to a couple's love story. I had never made a wedding bouquet before and rather than waiting until I took the Bridal Floral Design class. I decided to jump in and try. After watching every YouTube video I could find one night, I went into the BYU-I Bloom Room, the campus flower shop where I worked, and practiced on leftover flowers. That first bouquet was rough and unfinished but it ignited a little fire in me.
With little knowledge of business but a deep passion for floral design, I dove in, eager to grow my skills and learn everything I could about the wedding industry. When it came time to name my business, I felt stumped—nothing quite captured who I was or what I wanted this business to represent. After many conversations with friends and family, I realized that no name would be more fitting than one inspired by the Washington neighborhood where I grew up.

Final Thoughts
In so many ways Cedar Shores Floral has become more than just a floral business; it's a tribute to the community that shaped my passion for beauty, nature, and family. Over the past three years, as a wedding florist, I have had so many wonderful opportunities and have come to deeply love this industry. I am so excited to start to sharing my knowledge, inspiration, and tips to help couples as they plan their big day.
